1. Thank you for using the search engine for me. But I was interested in official documentation, if there is one.

10 Drives with a DL360 G9 & P440ar

I'm trying to use 10 drives in a DL360 G9 with a P440ar & the 2 drive expansion bay for the purpose of using the 2 extra drives as SSD Smart Cache for my data drives.

Drive Bays 1 to 2 - Operating system

Drive Bays 3-8 - Data Partition

Drive Bay 9-10 - SSD Smart Cache for the Data Partition

I've been back and forth with support for a couple of weeks, they've sent out a new cable which is a Y cable which was meant to let me plug 2 of the backpanes into a port on the P440ar, freeing up a port for drive bays 9-10. This cable did not fit the P440ar and is only compatable with the P840.

I've tried using the onboard B140i for the operating system, but it doesn't support SAS drives. It supports the SSDs but it won't let me smart cache them for the data partition. So that's not an option unless I buy some SATA drives to install the OS on.

My next thought was to use a raid expansion card, but I've been told its not compatible with a DL360 G9. Can someone confirm this?

What are my options?

Buy a P840 and use the Y cable I've been sent

Buy another P440 and plug bays 9-10 into it and use this for the operating system.

Can I use a 2nd hand P410 PCI RAID card, or similar, for bays 9-10  in a DL360 G9, I dont care if its not officially supported, will it work?

I'm trying not to spend more than I need to, I'd like to avoid buying a P840 or P440 just to use these extra 2 drive bays if possible.

Thanks

Hi Jimmy,
i ordered an Advanced Pack, so i will not have any more problems with connecting the ILO adapter. But what is about my initial problem ? The log messages without timestamp. That frightens me a bit. This server is important for us. Shall i update the firmware ? Current FW is 1.82 and i found a 1.96. Also i got several e-Mails from that server yesterday that a redundant fan was inserted/removed. But no one touched the server. And i can't monitor the hardware currently with the System Management Homepage.

With all SAS drivves your options are to go with a P840 or another P440. The Quickspecs call this out when using SAS drives.  The H240 is a lower cost option, to maybe host the OS as RAID 1

HP DL360 Gen9 2SFF SAS/SATA Universal Media Bay Kit 764630-B21
NOTE: Required when upgrading from an 8SFF config to a 10SFF config. This option kit is not supported on the 4LFF model. NOTE: This option kit cannot be used with the DVD-ROM or DVD-RW Universal Media Bay option kits.
NOTE: This kit contains a cable to attach the 2 drives to the internal B140i SATA controller. For SAS, an alternate storage controller and its associated cable kit are required.

Your working with a system that went out of production in Feb 2007.  Running the latest firmware is a lways the best practice.  You might re-seat all of the connections and plugable components in case there is some corrosion built up on the connections. iLO gets time settings from the host OS, you need the iLO and health drivers loaded

I'll look at getting a H240.

Thanks.

Processor Support for HP Proliant ML150 G6

Hi,

I have recently aquired one of these machines for some a basic Virtualisation lab for my studies. I am curretly looking at options for upgrading the CPU.

My server is currently equipped with one XEON E5502  processor (1.83ghz). I have looked into the following two options for upgrade

1. Purchase another XEON 5502, and run in a dual-cpu configuration

2.Purchase two new cpus, that are more powerful. I have been looking at purchasing two INTEL xeon E5540 or E5530 processors, and use these instead.

My question is can two E5540 or E5530 processors be used in this server, and is there sufficient power to do this?

Many thanks in advanced

ML350 G5 with 6-port LFF Backplane - Where does the I2C LED wire connect to from the Backplane?

Hello,

I have a ml350 G5 with a  6-bay SAS/SATA large form-factor (LFF) hard drive cage (416456-001 ) that uses a 6-port SAS/Sata Backplane (365668-001 ) .  The Backplane has the 2 SAS connectors that go to the controller and a 3-pin I2C connector for LED controll.  Where does the 3-pin I2C connector plug comming out of the backplane connect to?  I assume it would of been on the motherboard (original controller is embedded), but I do not see where and I have checked the server manual and motherboard connector diagrams and I could not find it.

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Configuration required to install NGFF M.2 SSD + M.2 to PCI - E Converter card

2 of our HP DL 360 G7 running Linux are running on 8 disks and running out of free space (post housekeeping). There are no empty slots available to add more disks to the server. I would really appreciate if I could get suggestions to expand storage capacity for this box.

One option, I am considering is to add a 500GB NGFF M.2 SSD + M.2 to PCI - E Converter card. But, this will not allow me to add available space to existing RAID sets and hence not provide any redundancy. Would I need to add a RAID controller card? If yes, then having only 1 disk will only allow RAID0 (Stripe set) which will also not allow any redundancy.

Any suggestions please...
Thank You!

Did you find a resolution to this?

You aren't necessarily forced to add a RAID Controller Card if you accept, instead, to create a Software RAID (at Kernel level) using well known Linux mdadm toolset (Aren't your Servers running on Linux?) and then mount created redundant Volume(s) on convenient mount point(s) - as example /mnt/data or whatever you need/like - on the existing filesystem(s).

Avoid RAID 0 (Striping): it requires at least two disks but if you lose just one disk (any disk) your Volume is gone. Always prefer RAID 1 Mirroring (min. 2 disks, 1 disk parity) or RAID 6 (min. 4 disks, 2 disks parity) Volumes, if possible.

How to set different Queue Depth value per ports?

Hi, Guys,
I have a DL380 runing Redhat Enterprise Linux 7.

I would like to connect with different multiple disk storage from DL380 via fibre chanel using "HPE 2port 16Gb Host Bus Adapter" .

In addition, I would like to set different queue depth value per ports. (eg. QD of port0 = 30, QD of port1 = 1)

Is there any way to set queue depth value per ports ( or LUNs)?

http://downloads.linux.hpe.com/SDR/getting_started.html

...is about as official as it gets.

In short:

  1. Download the add_repo.sh script and use it to add the HPE SDR repository to your distribution's package management system. http://downloads.linux.hpe.com/SDR/add_repo.sh
  2. Optional but highly recommended: follow instructions in http://downloads.linux.hpe.com/SDR/keys.html to add the keys so your distribution's package management tools will be able to verify the authenticity of the packages
  3. Use your distribution's package management tools to install the hpacucli package, just like any other .deb or .rpm that is available in the repositories.

Re: Flashing RED System Health LED ML110 G7

A red System Health LED indicates a critical problem in the system.

If the system has the iLO option installed, you could use the iLO even if the server is shut down, as long as power is still connected to the server and the iLO network connection is usable.

Within the iLO web GUI, you could read the Integrated Management Log to get more information about the problem, then work towards fixing it as appropriate.

If the system has no iLO or it is not usable, you should read the Proliant Server Troubleshooting Guide:

http://h20565.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c00300504

The troubleshooting flowcharts start from page 24.

On page 26, in the introduction for "Power-on Problems Flowchart", it says:

Symptoms:
•The server does not power on.
•The system power LED is off or amber.
•The system health LED is red, flashing red, amber, or flashing amber.

Possible causes:
•Improperly seated or faulty power supply
•Loose or faulty power cord
•Power source problem
•Improperly seated component or interlock problem

The actual Power-On Problems flowchart on page 27 goes into more detail. Click on underlined words in the flowchart to get more detailed instructions on testing each item.

Another useful document is the Maintenance and Service Guide for your specific server model. Here's the one for ML110 G7:

http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=5075942&docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-c02790685

This warning message is randomly logged to my HP Proliant GL380e G8 storge servers.  They do not have Windows OS installed on them.  The iLO doesn't show any errors in the IM log nor the Storage Information tab.  Is this soemthing to be concerned about?   How can I resolve?   Thank you

Smart Array P440 controller fails updates

$

Hi folks,

I've got a new server DL180 Gen9, and I'm trying to update the BIOS in the P440 Smart Array controller. The current BIOS version is 5.04, and the current available for download is 5.52. The reason I want to update the BIOS, is a nagging Windows event (about 20000 entries per day), that there is a failed IOCTL, which not uncommonly implies that there's a hardware problem. At least, I would like to eliminate a buggy BIOS as the cause. And I will not put the server in production, until the most serious errors are gone from the event log.

The problem is, the update always fails when I run the update package (cp032905.exe). I've tried several times, always with a reference to the engineering log. I've also tried Smart Provisioning at boot time, but Smart Provisioning cannot contact any HPE servers (seems to be the normal state of affairs), so no luck there.

I would be grateful to get any advice how to solve the situation.

Best regards,

Pete

DL360 G7 fan surging

I have a new-to-me DL360 G7 and everything is working fine.  What's weird is the system fan seems to surge.   It starts out quiet and then get mildly louder.   Not like start-up loud...just a little bit louder.   This cycle continues about every 5 seconds.

Any thoughts?
