Re: Discreet GPU in ML350 Gen9

Hi,

Ive been trying to find the answer to this without much luck but i have the graphics card cable for an ML350 Gen9, put in a AMD Radeon HD 7900 series card but the server wont boot. I've got 2 x 500w PSUs in there on dynamic power saving but im now wondering if putting a consumer card isnt supported.

I cannot find anyone who knows much about adding graphic cards to servers so hoping someone can help.

Its for a small busines running remote desktop for 3 people. Need to improve the video playback on the server as its crippling for them.

Many thanks in advance

Automated Storage Manager error

I have a ProLiant DL320s G1 system on Windows Server 2003 x86. About 3 weeks ago, our backups started failing on this server. In researching, it appears because shadow copies cannot be performed. While looking in the event logs and Automated Storage manager, I'm getting an error: Discovery: Failed.

Also, I'm getting the error: Error loading iSCSI network state.

Also, Error loading iSCSI preferred network setting.

Nothing has changed on our systems. I haven't been able to figure out what is causing the problem.

I launched Automated Storage Manager. All connections seem to be working but the error continues in the program Discovery Failed. I launched the Microsoft iSCSI initiator. Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. I'm not sure what else to do to fix this. We need backups operational again.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Charlie

What cable to connect a P440 to a dual-SAS 8SFF?

ML350 Gen9, new P440 controller (726821-B21), and an 8SFF drive cage with a pair of internal mini-SAS ports on the back. The P440 has a single port, some kind of double-wide SAS, and we can't figure out what cable we need to connect the two. We've come up with a couple potential part numbers for the cable by searching various combinations of "P440 8sff sas": 777418-B21, 774619-B21, 783009-B21. But since none of the pictures are accurate, and the descriptions tend to not describe the cable, we're not sure whether they connect the P440 to two mini-SAS connectors or just one.

Ok so I read that I need a license in a pdf from HP. Now what license do I need?

Does a HP iLO Advanced License for iLO3,4,5 also work with a LO100i card?

Most HPE Servers ship with the ILO chip onboard as a BMC. Some of these servers come standard with a dedicated ILO port, others require you to share the first NIC port with ILO (or add the dedicated port card like you list). Adding the 516806-001 card doesn't give you ILO, it only gives you a dedicated port for the ILO that's already on the system board.

According to the ILO Licensing Guide , IPMI abilities come standard with ILO on the server. There are some video's on youtube that explain how to setup IPMI in ILO.

What model server do you have? What generation?

Thanks for your reply, that makes sense. It's an old server, it's a DL160G6. I don't need a license for IPMI access?

by the way, the recommended and meanwhile default setting for IPMI on ILO is OFF because of security.

The quickspec for the server lists this cable, and searching on the number, the images that show up look correct. Large connector on one end that splits out into to mini sas connectors

Ok thanks for the recommendation. But this is a testlab and it didn't quiet answer my question :-)

So, this server shipped with a different BMC. Rather than ILO, it came with "HP Lights-Out 100i ".  Take a look at the user guide, and quickspecs, and I think you'll find lots of great info there.

My interpretation of both of those is that you don't need the add-on card (unless you want it for segmentation purposes) and that IPMI is included in the base license that is included with the system. The user guide shows step by step IPMI configuration instructions including using the shared (rather than dedicated) port.

Thanks Mike, perfect answer from you, appreciate it!

Those documents helped a lot and also the additional card isn't needed like you said.

"There is NO UEFI mode in DL360p Gen8."....

Which is a shame.  Why cant they add it to a BIOS update?  It's a drag having to keep building two versions of my images, one for UEFI and one for BIOS...

This threat is more than 4 years old, gen8 is no longer sold. Meanwhile we have gen10.
don't expect changes for gen8 servers, except intel microcode updates.

But also the newer systems can be bootet in legacy BIOS or UEFI mode, the user has the choice.

This HP Proliant motherboard seems to be dead. I was wondering if I can get my hands on the schematic of HP ProLiant ML10 gen 9 . Thanks in advance

If I reset iLO4 then the fan speed will go down to 47% for awhile, but then seems to always end up back at 100%, usually after a reboot.
