Disk Drive Firmware Update Recommended

$

Hi everyone,

When booting my server, I see POST error messages telling me to update 4 of my 15 drives with new firmware. I am using an HP ProLiant DL380 G6, and when I boot the server, I see this message: "A firmware update is recommended for this physical drive."

The two models the prompt lists are "HP DG146BAAJB" and "HP DG0146BALVN". I ran the latest Service Pack for ProLiant that is supported (version 2017.04.0) and updated everything it listed, but this doesn't seem to have fixed anything. Does anyone have individual download links for the firmwares, and can you also explain how I can intergate those into my existing copy of the SPP?

Thank you in advance!

DL380 gen10 supports more than one GPU ?

We want to upgrade our HP DL380 Propliant Gen10 (868703-B21), Intel Xeon 6138, with one or two GPUs for deep learning.

At the moment there is only one processor installed and we are trying to find out if there is there a setup (e.g. using an optional riser) that will allow us to  install a second GPUs in the system.

Hi, it looks like your HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 SKU, considering the specific SKU of the CPU it has, doesn't actually support any GPU Card: "No Graphic cards (GPUs) are available with this processor selection" <-- CPU SKU is 1st Generation Intel Gold Intel Xeon-Gold 6138 (2.0GHz/20-core/125W) FIO Processor Kit for HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 (826876-L21) Processor Required Option <-- HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 8SFF CTO (868703-B21) Server Base Configuration.

Hi parnassus,

Thank you for your prompt response and forgive my ignorance but I wonder if your findings apply to the whole 1st generation of Xeon Gold (that in this case I am doomed). Is there by any chance those apply only to the  (Intel Xeon-Gold 6137 (SKU 880168-L21) ?

You have correcty identified  my CPU (826876-L21)  I am just trying to  be sure that I got this right.

In any case,

Thank you

Hi, I've the strong suspect that yes...BUT you can check yourself if you analyze the QuickSpecs on the provided link. It looks like that some specific HPE Computation and Graphics Accelerators models:

  • HPE NVIDIA Quadro P2200 Graphics Accelerator
  • HPE NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 Graphics Accelerator
  • HPE NVIDIA Quadro RTX 8000 Graphics Accelerator
  • NVIDIA Tesla V100S 32GB Computational Accelerator

are only supported with the presence of 2nd Generation Intel Scalable Series Processors "x2xx”.

Clearly there are other GPUs/Computational Accelerators without the restriction of 2nd processor generation. In any case you should carefully check all other requirements once you find the accelerator that your specific server supports.

Specifically about NVIDIA, you can find other info on HPE NVIDIA Accelerators for HPE ProLiant Servers QuickSpecs. Use them with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 QuickSpecs to build your specific (for your configuration) matrix of compatibility.

Gen10 Array Controllers in mixed mode

Hi,

for Ceph we want to use bunch of DL380Gen10 server with i816a array controller. 2 Disks in RAID 1 and the remaining disks in HBA mode for Ceph. I know that there have been issues with mixed mode and that it's still not supported for VMware vSAN (IIRC). According to https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/V2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=A00017196ENW mixed mode is supported with Gen10 controllers. But it also states: "Improved efficiency with mixed mode for Smart Array Controllers". What impact/downside does this mixed mode have? Is it just performance, if yes how much?

Someone recommended me to just use a seperate RAID 0 for each disk, but this seems to have an impact on disk replacement and needs a reboot to confirm the data loss (I could not check this).

ILO LDAP Configuration not working

Hi there,

i´m trying various different ways on connecting our ILOs to Active directory using LDAP.
So far everytime i configure a new ILO it works for a couple of minutes but then breaks. After that i´m unable to make it working again. I tried with ILO3 - ILO5 in various different firmware levels but for whatever reason it keeps breaking.

from the ILO5 test im getting the line

Connect to Directory Server Success Connect using SSL Failed Error code 0 (ok). Consult the Integrated Lights-Out User Guide for details.

Error code 0 (ok) seems good to me?!
So there is no real reason for me why that should stop here as error code 0 is fine ?!

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Thank you for the firmware links!

Two questions:

1) Why wasn't this upgrade completed by the SPP already?

2) How do I install these updates if I'm running ESXi on my server? It would be ideal to add them to my existing copy of the SPP and deploy it that way. If you have any instructions on how to do this, please share them!

Thank you again!

Can't configure B120i RAID Controller or boot into SSA

I've had an ML10 V2 running for a few years now, and was using an Intel SSD 535 260GB as the boot disk. Suddenly my CentOS 8 server started to freeze over night. After the 3rd night, nothing can get back up.

Trying to install a new SSD drive but I can't get to load the HP SSA Offline tool. It boots up from ISO through HTML5 remote control, gets the three options, select option 1 (auto) and then I get the white HP Flash screen, and from there it hangs. No getting through to screens that I remember in the past, where I could indeed create a Volume 1 to boot from. ANy suggestion how to get into HP SSA?

I am not using the onboard RAID capabilities, have it in SATA mode, and use CentOS 8 mdadm software raid for my /dev/sd[a-d] disks. The SSD boot disk was sde. I'm starting to feel something is wrong with the motherboard B120i controller? Anyway of using this system and booting while bypassing the controller completely?

Installed last version Service Pack.
bp-Convenience-download-Gen8-1-5d449b8b7aa97e00015ba35b.png

But every server load we have a message:
261 - Server Platform Services Firmware requires update.

Изображение из буфера обмена (6).png

In ILO the version of Server Platform Services Firmware is displayed 0.0.0.0.0

Изображение из буфера обмена (7).png

BIOS settings were reset. NVRAM was cleaned. The result is the same.

I downloaded the ISO image hp-ivb_update-1.80-2.iso.
https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/cd/p355461430/v96920/hp-ivb_update-1.80-2.iso

Successfully booted and updated components.
But still Server Platform Services Firmware is displayed 0.0.0.0.0.
Other components updated successfully:
- System ROM (CP019748.scexe) - 11/12/2013
- System ROM Bootblock (CP021720.scexe) - 03/05/2013
- System Programmable Logic Device (CP021286.scexe) - Version 0x10

I tried to manually install the update SPS/ME (CP022774.scexe).
Изображение из буфера обмена (5).png

Everything seems to be successful and the version should change to 2.1.7.E7.4(B).
But after reboot server still Server Platform Services Firmware is displayed 0.0.0.0.0.

Could you please advice me what I can do fix the 261 message.

Thanks inadvance.

Question about Smart Array B320i

I got a DL380e Gen8 with integrated B320i controller and it behaves a bit funny.

It has 2 drives in RAID1 (450GB SATA) for the OS and 6 drives in RAID5 (8TB SAS) for data. I have no license for SAS installed and the Storage Manager complains about the SAS drives but they work fine.

Recently I installed a 512MB BBWC cache module but the controller still tells me that it has 0MB cache. I tried another module but still the same. Supercaps are connected too...

Question is: Do I need the SAS license to make the cache work? Or is my B320i defective in some way?

This may be a limitation of monitor drivers.

What drivers are currently installed on the monitor in the system?

Error when updating SSD firmware "Update not attempted. All selected devices are either up-to-date"

Full message "Update not attempted. All selected devices are either up-to-date or have newer versions installed".

This is for the ProLiant DL380 Gen10 series with the model VK003840JWSST SSD drive. The current FW version is listed as HPD1 via the iLO, but the bulletin below lists version HPD8 as the replacement. Just to clarify, this is to remedy the disk failures occuring at 40,000 hours.

https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_6c75359eb4eb48b28b11d4540a

We have followed the instructions in the article on downloading thr required .zip file and uploading to the server, but it appears to be reporting this message incorrectly when running the .exe unless I'm misinterpreting the firmware revision levels.

Thanks.

Re: ATA hard reset errors on DL320e v2 in AHCI mode with NCQ/write-cache enabled on SSD's

$

Few Years have passed since this was posted, but I think I have the same issue in my Gen8 Microserver. It has the B120i raid conrtoller working in AHCI .

I have got four 6TB drives connected to it and there is zfs raidz1 on top of these. At high load one disk gets timeout and sata link reset (on random, disk 1 OR 2 OR 4, not yet seen with disk 3). This causes the array to go degraded. When I try to resilver the array it puts heavy load on the drive that was just dropped from sata controller, so it resets once again, goes degraded and starts the resilvering from zero % once again. This repeats every 20-60minutes. This makes the relisver process impossible to finish. Previously I just took the drives into a separate machine for resilvering and after this was done they could work once again in the server.

Now I have tried this method to disable write cache. It has been going for over 4 hours without the drive link resetting, although the speed is terribly slow. Thanks for the temporary solution.

I will buy some used LSI SAS HBA card, hopefully moving the disks to a different controller (pci-e) will fix the issue permanently.
