ProLiant ML310e Gen8 - Upgrading Hard Disk Backplane?

Hello,

I have a HP ProLiant ML310e Gen8 Server with Xeon E3-1220v2, and it comes with a non-hot-plug disk bays. After spending some time looking in the manuals, it seems that an upgrade to Hot Plug disks is possible with a backplane change...

Here's the backplane kit :

http://h30094.www3.hp.com/product/sku/10447646/mfg_partno/674839-B21

Now, the problem is, is that the only part I need to order and change?  (except for the hard disks, which would need an upgrade to the new "SmartDrives" anyway)

Thanks in advance!

Smart Array P410i, adding logical drives

Hi, I have HP ML350 g6 with P410i controller. One array with Two logical drives. Two physical drives in bay 1 and 2 of the server. I just installed two more physical drives in bay 3 and 4 of the server.  I have ACU installed and want to configure the new drives as One more Logical drive. HOw do I add another Logical drive. I thought I've done this before - but for some reason - I;m not seeing an option to configure the new drives as a new logical drive.

Thanks for your response.

Welcome to the forums. It's best to post a new topic when you have a question. This thread is almost 5 years old.

To answer your question.   You put disks in an array, and then create logical drives within that array. You can create a new array and logical drive for the new disks, or you can expand the current array and add another logical drive using the free space.  In your case it is probably easier to create another array and then create a new logical drive within the new array

In "HP Intelligent Provisioning 1.60 Release Notes". I find this at page 6

Windows-specific issues
• The Volume License installation does not complete when you use the Recommended installation method to install Windows 2008 R2. The following error message is displayed during installation, “Windows cannot read the <ProductKey> setting from the unattend answer file.”

Suggested action: Use the Manual installation method for Windows 2008 R2 if you encounter this error. Not all Volume License media present this problem.

HP Proliant ML350 Gen 8: How to set up the disks.

$

Hi,

We are about to install a new HP Proliant ML350 Gen 8 server on to one of our sites and the job of setting up the server has been assigned to me. Out of the box the server has by default set up the 5 500Gb drives as RAID 5. I'm wondering what is the best way to set up the disks for this server. The details of the setup will be as follows:

- Windows Server 2012 will be the Hypervisor/Host OS, and there will be two virtualizes Windows Server 2012 Servers.

- The first Windows Server 2012 virtual machine will be main system server, with data shares (about 100GB of information) and printers. The main system database (~20Gb) will also be located on this server.

- The second Windows Server 2012 virtual machine will be for Remote Desktop Services. We will probably use a combination of session host and virtual desktops.. This part is very much secondary and will be more for testing with a view to rolling out in a few years.

To be honest, the size of the disks is huge in comparison to the information that will be stored on it, so I'm just looking for other people's opinions on what they would consider the best way to set it up on the five disks.

thanks in advance.

"this is not true. I can confirm that it must apply the update SPP2013."

So scharchouf knows more than the whole SPP team?

The release notes say:

"When migrating directly from an older version of the SPP to the latest, please review the release notes for
the versions being skipped to be aware of changes that have occurred during those releases."

It says also

"Systems using software and firmware components delivered with the following products  should be able to easily
migrate to this SPP: 2013.09; 2013.02".

"able to easily migrate" doesn't sound like a requirement, sorry. It wouldn't make so much sense anyway.

Do you know a good reason scharchouf?

However, be aware of the following limitation:

Drivers and/or enablement kits must be installed prior to detecting and updating some hardware and firmware -HP SUM may need to be run twice for all firmware components to be presented for installation

The service pack 9.10 is from 2012, isn't it? It's much too old for a Gen8 server and meanwhile unsupported anyway.

Monitoring 6i controller in SLES 11

$

Hi all:  I am looking for a way to monitor the hard drives in al old DL385 G1 server with a Smart Array 6i controller.  I had to upgrade one of our old servers to SLES11 SP2 which broke HD monitoring.  The HP tools look for kernel version 2.6.32 or lower while SLES 11 is using the 3.0 kernel (renamed 2.6.x).

Are there any third-party solutions?  All I need to know is when a HD fails.

Thanks, Chris.

I've never had a problem skipping SPP versions.

The only possible problem I can think of is on Windows 2008 R2 and earlier, where some versions of the Network Config Utility depend on a certain version of the NIC driver.  Updating one before the other has caused me some problems in the past.  Typically it results in the NCU failing to load until the NIC drivers are updated to some specific version or higher.

Another possible exception related to the VCA and not being able to talk to certain versions of a VCRM or SIM server, but that's not quite the same thing unless your VCRM is on the same server.

There are probably a few other exceptions that I simply haven't encountered, but in general if you're updating all the drivers and software at once, I don't imagine you'd have issues 99% of the time.

Going back to the original post, version 9.10 is kind of old and probably didn't support Gen8, so yeah, get 2013.09 at least, or 2014.02.

What version is the NIC driver? There were issues with 7.8.6.0 (I think that was the one). Make sure it's not that one... 7.8.50.0 is the latest driver for that NIC (the Broadcom gigabit multifunction models).

Typically I saw issues with Hyper-V machines on the system if it had that buggy driver version, but even a few native apps like Couchbase server would cause sporadic problems. It's like it wasn't fragmenting packets correctly or something weird.
