It is a good value, what's wrong with it?

But the firmware is very old, consider to update!

Thank you for reply!

So 45 is good then, I get used to desktop drives to avoid go above 40C :) so I assumed server drives where the same.

I will update fw, should I update bios first o iLO2 first?, both are old as hell indeed :)

I noticed PSU temperature quite high, not burning hot, but hotter than I would like, fan is running but slow, as the entire server.

I have a DL180G6 and it is always cool, also drives are usually in the 35 degrees C range, even the 15K ones, but fans are usually at 40%.

i ordered another psu for redundancy, just in case.

thank you.

L.

Re: HP MicroServer SATA RAID evaluation

Hello

Lots and lots of posts about teh Raod Controller on the Microserver. Mine is the N54L. Love it etc.. But decided I want Server 2012 R2 and Hypervisor. I have 4 hdd's.. 2x250gb and 2x3TB. I fancy Raid 1 on each pair. I wiped the lot with DBAN. Set up the Raid in the BIOS utility and enabled boot from the raid. All looked good. Installed 2012 R2 and go to look at the drives and see three.. one 250gb and two 3TB. I was expecting only two. The BIOS up to date (SP64420). The storage controller download on the HP site (cp020624.exe) doesn't see the onboard raid controller. HP and AMD are no help. Anyone got any bright ideas?

Thanks

Andrew

Hello

I have the exact same server and is everything onboard, you cannot replace anything :(

My guess is that your NICs have a toasted transformer/transceiver.

since gigabit link requires 4 twisted pairs, but 100 and 10Mbps only 2 twisted pairs, is safe to assume that one (or both) of the pairs used for gigabit have a damaged transformer / transceiver.

now, both have the same behavior?

one is stuck at 10mb and the other at 100mb? always the exact same combination?

did you tested connecting it to a different switch with a different CAT6 patch? (I know, obvious, but sometimes, the most obvious one, is the one that we even didin't think to test, been there, done that hehe).

did you test it with another OS? (win/lnx) same exact behavior on both?.

Hi there! i want to ask professional society about Syslog Service. What do i need to configure Syslog Server???

The H221 is an LSI based SAS controller and uses the mpt2sas driver. I don't have one handy to verify, but it should work with the latest Debian/Ubuntu mpt2sas drivers.

Hi everyone,

Server DL360 G3 fails, is thevoltage regulator module (VRM) is required for starup?

Yes, the VRM supplies power to the CPU

Hi, I think this would fit better in the Linux section of the forum.

I'm sure there are many posts about this topic on the Internets :)

//Edit: A quick checked showed that there are apparently syslog servers also for Windows!

What I'd use is a server that runs Linux. Most of the Linux distros have a syslog service available. It is called by many names, depending on which Linux Distro. Sometimes it's called rsyslog, syslogd, or syslog-ng. In RHEL it's rsyslog. To set up it as a service you need to basically:

  1. enable log receiption in /etc/rsyslog.conf (so uncomment the UDP/TCP sections)
  2. restart rsyslog
  3. open firewalls

You probably want to set up rules so that logs from remote servers/services are not stored in /var/log/messages. Very simplified, you can for example say that if this $IP then put log $HERE.

Next step is making these logs useful :)

Lately I've been importing the syslog logs with logstash into an Elasticsearch index and then use kibana to view them in a web interface.

Re: PLEASE Help.....ML350 G5

Yah I'm having the same problem. I tried the disconnecting the DVD & flipping the sixth switch / CMOS battery work around  but neither of them seemed to work.  I have no other red light except for the IERR CR59 LED. My CPU LED's are fine and all the front panel display lights are also green. I'm thinking that this could be a PSU issue for me. The PSU is making some sort of clicking sound that is remincent of something that sounds like electrical unstablility. Feels like there is too much drain on it and its having a tought time powering everything up. The PSU still has a green light though.

The following is what I have in my ML350 G5, just the basic things that I need to make sure the server boots.:

- HP 407748-001 12VDC Processor Power Module For ProLiant G5 ML350 ML370

- HP SA641/642 128MB RAID Card BBWC 351580-B21/351580-001/356272-001/413486-001

- 32GB MEMORY KIT 8 x 4GB FBDIMM PC2-5300F 667MHz for HP PROLIANT ML370 ML350 G5

- Two Intel SLBBA - Quad Core X5460 3.16GHz CPU - 120V 3910B149

However I only have one PSU, so I'm thinking that I don't have enough power to run all the components. Would any of you know if having two Xeon Quad Core's running at 120V's needs two PSU's or not? If so I'll purchase a new one and see how things progress.

Hope someone can help me!

If you look in ILO at the temperature status or at the systems management homepage, it shows the warning and critical thresholds for each of the temp sensors. That should give you an idea of what HP considers normal operating temps and at what level it thinks it's getting dangerous.

You can also check your power management settings. It's possible to configure the server for different cooling levels and maybe yours is set to something non-default.

15K drives do run hot... 10K not as hot, and your average desktop 7200 RPM drive is cooler still, with the 5400 and 4200 RPM drives running the coolest. Yes, the higher the RPM the hotter they tend to be. Basic thermodynamics at work there. :)

Do you have redundant power supplies on it by any chance? You can try reinserting the supplies.

When you set it up, would it be safe to assume you were plugged into a 120V line (if you're in the US or Canada)? And when you put it in a datacenter it might be 208 or 240?

The PSU should work fine either way, but maybe try a 120V outlet just to check it out.

Did the front panel LED lights show any specific faults besides the power thing (which I think is the one you were talking about), like the power supply, CPU, or anything else?

Hello waaronb, thank you for your reply.

What bugs me is that ILO2 doesn't show drive temperatures!!.

I can see temperatures for everything but NOT for disks!, i don't understand why, since this server has p410i (integrated) it should be able to read drive temperatures, or at the very least, SFF bay temperature.

Everything else is way below the threshold parameters that's why this server does not increase fan speeds, because obviously does not read drive temperatures :(

In this bios version I have only two settings, efficient and increased cooling, if I select increased cooling fans stay at 60% and the noise is VERY significant, also the power consumption increases by 15W, in efficient mode, it stays at 13%, there is no intermediate option, only a 10% more, would be enough, but it seems that there is no way to doit.

will try to update firmware (I have never done that in a server, so I am a little concern hehe).

thank you

HI,

I am in the middle of a planing a project in vmware environment VMWare Vcenter 5.1 . and I been asked to use one of the Company server ( HP DL ) as a Storage for 3 ESXI hosts ( i am going to use HP DL 360 Gen 8). I forget to wriht that every Host will have 2 or 3 VMs and the primary reson for the storage is for V motion.

Is it possible and if it is how ??
