Best, most compatible Win OS for Proliant G8 server?

I am getting a Proliant ML350p Gen 8 server for home use. It's a machine for learning server management/deployment and just having fun playing with high end gear. I will also use it for oddball things like running BOINC, gaming, and file/backup storage.

I would like to know which version of Windows Server I should purchase for the easiest installation and most compatibility. Can I go with the latest and greatest, Windows Server 2019? Would I be better served (no pun intended) with something like Server 2016?

Thanks!

Deploy Server using USB with Intelligent Provisioning

Hi,

I have a server HPE ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2 with NVRAM error to read or reinstall Intelligent Provisioning, it is not a production server and it is out of HPE support contract. But I need to reinstall the Operating System (which is Linux) and I'm facing some errors due a missing RAID driver.

There is a way to boot the Intelligent Provisioning from a USB and iniatiate this installation this way? Like the old HP Smart Start?

Thanks

Greetings!

By "2 drives on the bottom right", I understand that you are referring to slot 11 and 12

Page#74 https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=a00008180enw

I understand that you are using only SATA drives as S100i supports SATA drives only.

Please confirm by installing working drives on those slots.

Remove and reseat the cabling from the controller to the drive backplane.

Is the m.2 drive installed is an HPE drive? Please have the m.2 drive removed to check if there is any change in the behaviour.

Spare T15 screws fan Microserver Gen8

I'm looking for spare T15 screws (4) to mount the system fan of a  Microserver Gen8 to the chassis, but can't find the spare part number. I searched on partsurfer, looked in the maintenance manuals and searched on Google, but the only related spare is can find is the of the fan itself. Does anybody know if there is a spare part number for these screws or of any other way to obtain them? I think the G10 version uses the same screws.

Thanks,

Michiel

Replying to myself as I think aloud.

The server has two E5-2640 V2 processors which gives me 12 physical cores. I'm sure one day I will want to max out the system and upgrade to something like the E5-2697 V2 which has has 12 physical cores per processor. Installing two of them will give me 24 cores. Wow-wee!

How would licensing and support work for that many cores? Don't the Server ediitions give you 16 core support standard and then an 8-core adder must be purchased? I'm wondering now if I would be better off going with a Pro or Enterprise edition of Windows 10 because they don't track processor and core counts.

Thoughts?

Need Advice on Expanding Storage on DL380 G7

Hello folks,

Could use some advice & verification before I spend the money and upgrade. Can you help?

WHAT I HAVE: DL380 G7, 8 discs, optical drive & a P410 controller upgraded with 512MB BBWC module.

WHAT I WANT: Upgrade to 16 discs.

WHAT I THINK I NEED TO DO:

  1. Remove the optical drive.
  2. Install 8 drive SFF drive cage (Part# 516914-B21)
  3. Install an additional P410 controller upgraded with 512MB BBWC module.
  4. Install 8 more SAS drives into the new bays.
  5. Access the RAID controller setup utility at boot up to create another couple of arrays (4 discs in each).

Overall, is this correct? If not where have I gone wrong? Assuming it's correct, is this a difficult process? Do you know of any documentation which tells you exactly how to do this? I'm more a software guy than hardware. If there's any way to connect the wrong cable to the wrong port and end up frying my DL380, I'll find it. I'm clever that way! I run a pair of 460W PSUs. Is that still sufficient going from 8 discs to 16? What about cooling? Anything I should be concerned about? I have a box fan aimed directly at the front of my DL380 and it seems happy enough with that plus normal home AC.

I'm apprehensive because some cage listings talk about a back plane and cables, others don't. I just want to make sure I buy everything I need first time.

Finally, I originally bought my DL380 with the optical drive because I needed to load/install software from disc. I vaguely remember being told there's an alternative way to boot from/load software using a thumb drive connected to an internal USB. Is that correct?

Thank you so much in advance for your help & expertise.

Please provide information about the server on which the GPU's are installed.

Share the Model information about the server & the GPU's & share the information on which slot are the GPU's getting installed.

Thank you

Re: ML350 Gen9 P440 Expansion - Connection instrucrtions

Hi Arno,

As per the information shared if im correct you have a P440ar and a P440 controller. If this is the case then P440ar does not require a cable for the cache to be connected to the battery as this card has connections to the battery hardwired on the systemboard.

If you have purchased a P440 controller then this is a PCI based controller and for this a cable needs to be connected from the systemboard to the cache on the P440. Please check below link as it should be one of the two cables used:-

https://partsurfer.hpe.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=726821-B21

792836-001 or 792837-001

P440ar - Does not require additional power cable for the cache to receive backup power from battery.

P440 - Requires power cable for the cache to receive backup power from battery.

If the connections are good and still one of this shows failure but shows ok for the other then it means that bacttery is not the issue. Make sure that the firmware of the controller is updated so that it is not a reporting issue.

Hope this answers your query.

Cheers

Thank you for reply.

Do I need to make any special setup to increase the endurance or just replace the old HDD with the new bigger one.

If you replace a 120GB SSD with 200GB SSD in a RAID 1, only 120GB will be used.

The built-in controller of the SDD will ensure to use all the space and prevent hot-spots, however the usable space will be 120GB.

OMG! I've only just seen your reply - years later. I'm so sorry for not responding sooner. Thanks for responding.

I must have got super busy and forgot to follow up. Anyway, here I am in Feb 2020. My DL380 G7 is still going strong, but still has the dim LED weirdness. I will look into this again now I have something to check.

Thanks again for responding. I hope you see this and know I (finally) appreciated your time.

All the best,

Sean.
