HP ProLiant ML150 G5 starts by itself when connecting power, no video, full fan speed

Hello!

I have had a HP ProLiant ML150 G5 for like 5 years I belive. The Server has served me well, I love it!

Now, one year ago it started to shut down by it self some times, and it got worse, after a few weeks I coulden't start it anymore, it would start and after a few seconds shut down again, and sometimes restart it self and shut down, like a Self start test or something.

The LED light in the front (number 4) is always green, indicating that everything is fine...

I bought a new Motherboard of eBay, used but in very good condition, I also bought 2 Processors of eBay (2.00ghz Xeon E5405) I put in one of them to start with and I hooked everything else up. Now the SAME problem occurs, and I dont understand what the problem is!

I connect the Power cable to the PSU (or press the ON of the back of the PSU) and instantly the Server starts up, with full fan speed, nothing on the screen, and it just runs at full fan speed until I disconnect the power. The ON button in the front doesen't have no say what so ever, I even disconnected the whole cable from the Motherboard, leading to the front LED's and Power ON button, but that didn't change a thing, it still does the same stuff.

I have switched the RAM's and only used 1, 2 and 3 at the time, just to test everything.

No mather what I do, the server still does this stupid thing, I also have to mention that I googled around for this problem ALLOT, and I found that the Temp Sensor in the front of the Chassi, might be damaged, so I tried to splice those 2 wires together, but that didn't change anything, so now I dont have that Sensor anymore, just so you guys know.

I love this server and I dont want to get a new one, how can this happen when I switched out the Motherboard and the Processor... Weird!

I had updated to bios version 0151025 / 2010.10.25 - 13 Dec 2010. My bios was still the original.

The CPU is the Xeon 3065 and running SBS2003 with 4Gbyte ram( installed are 8Gbyte).

Trying to reinstall the bios did not solve the problem, also tried it to reinstall through usb install.

I have a second ML110 G5, and that is working still fine under the old original bios, is there a tool or utility to copy the bios to a usb stick and reinstall it on a other server?

Hi,

If you want to downgrade the BIOS to an older version then go to server bios download page and refer to Revision History.

Download the version you are looking for.

Then follow this document to downgrade.

Thank You!

I do one picture with trace to see:

ML110 G7 GoldFran

I suppose that this is Switch maintenance, right? It´s very small, I think change jumper with pencil for example. This is the procedure?

  1. Open case and turn switch nº 6 in off
  2. Turn Proliant and wait to any message
  3. Turn Proliant off and change by ON maintenance nº6 switch

Is this correct?

Thanks mcfly5 for the prompt answer.

The new drive is the same size and speed as the old ones waaronb. About the firmwire I didn't even think about it being up-to-date when I was reading what it said on the outside so thanks for pointing that out. I appreciate your response on my question.

how to use Linux Magic SysRq with ILO 2

Hi,

i'd like to use the linux Magic SysRq with an ILO network adapter. I managed to get the virtual serial port running. While googleing a lot, i found that the SysRq has to be initiated in a serial connection with ESC-Ctrl-B (break) and afterwards the key for the desired SysRq function. But that doesn't work. When i press ESC-CTRL-B quickly sucessively and afterwards one key for the desired SysRq-function, e.g. 'S' for sync, i always get a help message for SysRq:

Sep 9 16:30:20 sunhb58820 kernel: [ 6948.509447] SysRq : HELP : loglevel(0-9) reBoot Crash terminate-all-tasks(E) memory-full-oom-kill(F) kill-all-tasks(I) thaw-filesystems(J) saK show-backtrace-all-active-cpus(L) show-memory-usage(M) nice-all-RT-tasks(N) powerOff show-registers(P) show-all-timers(Q) unRaw Sync show-task-states(T) Unmount force-fb(V) show-blocked-tasks(W) dump-ftrace-buffer(Z)

Using any letter like Q or T or W does not work. I always get the help message, just numbers to change the loglevel (0-9) work.

Any help appreciated

Bernd

P.S. IT's a ILO 2 adapter, firmware 2.25, host ML 350 G6, system ROM 07/02/2013

HP Proliant DL380 GEN8 has phantom FAN failures reported

All,

Once or twaice per week our monitoring system alerts us that a particular DL380 GEN 8 server has a fan down. The problem is - no physical fans ever go down. Nothing posts in the Event Viewer.  The fans (which includes the one extra redundant fan) all show green in the iLo System Information section.

Fan speeds are 1=6%, 2=6%, 3=6%, 4=34%, 5=43%, and 6=43%

Nothing about fan failures under the iLo Event Logs either.

Temperatures in iLo System Information are all OK.

When I contacted HP, they gave me HP document ID: c00871795. However, this seems to reference BladeSystems only.

Any ideas what could be causing these phantom alerts?

Thanks,

Bob

Installing drivers and software to DL380 G6

Hello,

I installed Server 2012 R2 to this server (DL380 G6). Now I need to install drivers etc. It's been a while when I have installed physical HP server.  Then I used HP Proliant Support Pack and it was easy & fast process.

Now I'm downloading HP Smart Update Manager (v. 710) and I don't know how to use it to update and install drivers to this server. Do I need something else too?

If you haven't used HPSUM before (like you've only used the old Proliant Support Pack setup previously), then it's a little tricky to get used to, but it's not that hard.

You run the setup from the HPSUM directory and then you can add the local machine (or other machines too) to the list to scan and install updates. You have to provide authentication info but if it's just your local system you can tell it to use your current login.

Then it's pretty familiar... it scans the system to see what's there and what needs to be upgraded/installed. You can do it in express mode or pick and choose what to do (which is what I generally do since there's some stuff I don't need installed... tape drivers for example).

Make sure you already have SNMP with WMI installed since that's a requirement for the agents.

Just take your time with it and try to have fun. :)
