DL380 Gen8 servers -- options for usb or SD card installation of vSphere??

$

I'm trying to discover and understand what options exist for HP DL380 Gen8 servers to install vSphere on USB media or flash cards or what.

I've been told about HP 32 GB flash cards but not whether two of them can be installed in RAID1, I know there's the 8 GB dual microSD USB devices, but not whether these can be used in a Gen8 server...I would also like to know if the RAID1 USB device can be used with non-HPE microSD cards, which would be cheaper...

Thank you, Tom

How to replace HDD predicted to fail

Hi there, I have an HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 running Ubuntu server. It has two hot swap SAS HDDs in RAID 1. One of those HDDs has the flashing status light amber & green, which from what I can find online means the HDD is predicted to fail. I have a replacement HDD, but not sure what steps are involved to swap it out to rebuild the array with the new HDD.

On the Dell and Lenovo servers I have worked on, there is typically a setting in the RAID utility to mark the failing drive as offline. Once the RAID controller sees it as offline, then I can pop it out, plug in the new one, and the array starts rebuilding automatically. I was in the RAID utility for this server but I couldn't find any such option to make the failing HDD offline. I inserted the new HDD into the server (in one of the spare bays) which the RAID utility sees, but as unconfigured. I couldn't find any option to get it to start rebuilding the array.  So the array remains degraded.

Also, is there some way of doing this through the iLO? I'd prefer to avoid having to restart the server and accessing the RAID utility that way if possible. The iLO shows the status of the array but as far as I can tell, doesn't provide any option.

Thanks in advance!

as we discussed earlier the usb raid needs gen9 or 10 servers, but this gen8 has an internal sd slot too.

Can one use more than one (1) SD card in Gen8 servers??

If so, would they function as a RAID 1??

Thank you, Tom

Replacing SSD Cache drive

Hi new user here,

I'm supporting a DL380 Gen 9 and am getting an SSD Wearout error from iLO. This server is configured with the P440 raid controller. Now I need to take down the server to replace the Raid cache battery since it's also bad, is there any special procedure to replace the SSD cache drive, or do I just swap it out?

Thank you, I was afraid you would say that. :)

I will get some good SanDisk flash cards. :)

If HP is unable to patch, opts not to patch or is waiting on updates from Intel this needs to be listed in the CUSTOMER BULLETIN.

usually you make sure the other disks in the array are ok, then you swap out the disk and insert the new one.

but now, once the new disk is already in, you may make it a spare, that will kick in once the disk is bad or degraded, depends on your settings.

Re: Where to download Innovation Engine (OS Independent) 0.1.5.2 firmware for DL380 Gen10 servers?

Thanks for that, I found the .bin files.

There are two zip files, each containing a bin file:

cp034104.zip contains IEGen10_0.1.5.2.signed.bin

cp034105.zip contains IEGen10_0.1.5.2b.signed.bin

Is one of them an incremental update perhaps?

We just ran it from the ESXi CLI (the .vmexe file) and it worked fine.

Hello, we updated three DL360 Gen9 with latest 2.54 BIOS. Now Intel and HP say this BIOS (microcode) is buggy. How can we revert to 2.52? We cannot get it since BIOS 2.52 is not available for free download while 2.54 was.

I guess wait for HPE to release their next good version, and then patch again...

this new microcode may cause problems, but maybe it works for you.

HPE does not say what to do if you already have this version ...

however, check what version your backup ROM has and consider to revert.

I can find a RPM and a EXE version of this bundle, but not the BIN.

So there is no B version for the two.

But usually if there is a B version, they changed something regarding the firmware loader, but the firmware itself remains the same.
